I finally have the other 450SL here. Now that it is unburied from the pile of crap it was under, and is not covered by a lot of dirt (comparatively speaking) I can see it is not at all white, but rather a shade of metallic grey.

Since I can finally get a look underneath and at the edges of all the panels I think I can with confidence say that it is indeed most suited to being a parts car for the brown one.

On the plus side it has a lot of small items of use including a factory radio which I can use to return the other one to stock, and most of the Mercedes tool roll. Hopefully, the odometer works as well.

Now I just need my infant son to start sleeping long enough for me to not spend my days (and nights) trying to rock him to sleep.

How rusty is it?

The grey one (at a glance) needs a new passenger door, probably (and certainly easiest) a rear passenger quarter panel, easiest to do a new front passenger quarter panel, a new hood (or someone to weld in a new piece on the passenger side reinforcement) and various surface rust spots on the rest of the car. Basically the right side of the car is toast. So I haven’t even bothered checking underneath the car.

The soft top has a hole in it that has been mended with thread, and I’m not sure it is waterproof.

I might use it as welding/bodywork practice if I don’t take anything from the engine and just futz with it to see if I can make it drive-able after I finish the brown one. Though that would mean talking my wife into an English wheel, hammers and a welding machine.
